The Global WiDS Conference is a 1-day technical conference started in 2015 in Stanford. It takes place this year on March 5th and it will feature talks from Elena Grewal, Head of Data Science @ AirBnb, Jia Li, Head of R&D, Cloud AI @ Google (Jia and I worked in Yahoo Labs together!), and Lada Adamic, Research Scientist Manager @ Facebook to name just a few. The WiDS conference aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. All genders are invited to participate in the conference, which features exclusively female speakers.
Last year the conference also had partnering events in 80 countries around the world through WiDS Ambassadors. I’ve signed up to be the WiDS Ambassador for Dublin / Ireland and I’m hosting the first event WiDS Dublin in March which I’m super excited about. The date and format is still TBD but the basic plan is to host an evening event where we broadcast a talk from the Global WiDS Stanford conference and then have a couple of talks from 2-3 local female Data Scientists / Data Leaders. I’m super excited about this event and I cannot wait to celebrate & hear from some amazing women in #datascience and #machinelearning in Ireland. Watch this space for full details of the event.
Jan 25th marked my 2nd Interversary a.k.a. 2 years in Intercom! That means a 2nd Intercomic and what an amazing Intercomic it is. Yes that’s a nod to my (over) use of party parrots in slack – if there is such a thing as overusing party parrots. Rose’s monster birthday cake for her 2nd birthday made in it, as did my InspireFest talk. Those are keys to our new house in my hand and in the background there’s a lovely reference to HER+Data. I love it! I’ve experienced & learned so, so much over the past 2 years but the real highlight is the smart, talented & humble people I get to work with daily. People who really know me – maybe a little too well 😉
In July I stood on the stage of the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin and gave a talk on the Human Side of Data Science to the most wonderful audience at InspireFest 2017. What a conference and what an experience! To say that InspireFest is the most inspirational conference I’ve ever attended is a gross understatement. I’ve never heard talks from so many amazing people — fearless women in particular. Speaking at the conference was both exhilarating and terrifying all at once. Definitely an experience I’m proud of and one of those moments to remember forever!
I was invited to serve as a judge for 2 categories of this years DatSci awards – Best Use of Data Science in a Startup and Best Contribution to Data Science Academic Research Body. After attending beautiful Croke Park to hear the finalists present details of their contributions I was blown away by the high standard of data science work currently happening in Ireland. This made judging tough but I think it’ll add to the excitement on the awards night 🙂 I’m really looking forward to attending the awards ceremony in September, not only to witness the winners collecting their prizes, but also to connect with lots of other data folks in Ireland.
On May 17th I organized a kickoff event for the HER+Data community hosted by Intercom, Dublin. And what a kickoff it was! The theme of the kickoff was to give attendees the opportunity to meet some amazing women who work with data and hear their inspiring career stories. The goal was to showcase that there are multiple paths and diverse backgrounds that lead to a career in data. We had talks from:
Niamh Kirk, a Media researcher working on a PhD in the field of journalism, culture and migration; a media analyst and multimedia journalist; founder of The Media Editor blog and contributor with The Institute for Future Media and Journalism (@FujoMedia)
Flora Devlin, Product Analyst @Intercom, who helps product teams use their data effectively and understand it thoughtfully. A background in Maths & Economics, Flora is passionate about strategy and loves all things related to travel.
Martina Naughton, Data Scientist @ZalandoTech with over 10 years across industrial and academic research. Martina has a Computer Science background, is passionate about machine learning and data mining, and is a big travel and sports enthusiast!
I also spoke at the kick-off event and shared my experiences working in Yahoo, Telefonica and now Intercom. When I founded HER+Data I didn’t really know if this community would be interesting, welcomed or useful for other women working in data. I suspected it would be, but you never really know! To my surprise > 30 women turned up for our kickoff event. The talks was super, the conversation flowed and feedback from the ladies that turned up was super. I’m so excited to keep the momentum going and seeing how far this community can go over the next year!
I recently founded HER+Data, a group for women who work with and love data. My goal is to bring together women who work with data or who would like work in data – to support one another, share experiences and talk data. I’d like to connect and inspire amazing data women with diverse expertise and experience. So artists, analysts, scientists, students, developers, researchers, designer,s journalists, leaders and entrepreneurs. HER+Data is a space where everyone can share their stories and develop. Our events are simple and informal. There will be great content, laughter and a room full of data women from various backgrounds. So come along, ask questions, and get inspired! And if there are specific topics that you would like to see discussed then please let us know. We are always happy to explore new ideas 🙂 You can join the community via our Meetup page.
